FUTO’s International Collaborations.

The Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) has been actively expanding its international collaborations to enhance academic excellence, research quality, and global visibility. These efforts align with FUTO’s mission to become a world-class university by nurturing promising students and exceptional staff in science, technology, and enterprise for global impact.

International Accreditation and Quality Assurance

A significant step in FUTO’s international engagement is its ongoing process of international institutional accreditation and quality review by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), a globally recognized regulatory and quality enhancement body. In early 2024, FUTO successfully completed the Gap Analysis stage of this review, involving extensive virtual interactions with university leadership, faculty, students, and alumni. This process, supported by the Africa Centre of Excellence in Future Energies and Electrochemical Systems (ACE-FUELS), aims to align FUTO’s academic standards with international benchmarks and position the university prominently on the global stage.

Academic Conferences and Partnerships

FUTO has also fostered international academic collaborations through conferences and scholarly exchanges. For instance, the university hosted its first ICT International Conference, which brought together leading global scholars, including Professor Mike Hinchey, to share knowledge and forge research partnerships. Such events facilitate the exchange of ideas, expose students and faculty to global trends, and create opportunities for joint research and publications.

The university’s collaboration with the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) is another notable example. Since 2018, FUTO has partnered with IEEE Nigeria Section, IEEE Africa Council, and international journals to organize conferences and training programs focused on cutting-edge technology areas like mechatronics, renewable energy, and cybersecurity. These partnerships not only enhance student professional development but also integrate FUTO into global scientific networks, increasing its research impact and visibility.

Industry and International Organizations Collaboration

FUTO’s collaborations extend beyond academia into partnerships with international organizations and industry. The Future Unilever Campus Ambassador Program (FUCAP), in partnership with UNICEF, exemplifies this approach by equipping students with career-transforming skills and global perspectives. Such programs prepare students for the international workforce and foster links between FUTO and multinational corporations and NGOs.

Strategic Vision for Global Engagement

FUTO’s international collaborations are part of a broader strategic vision to transform Nigeria’s economy from consumer-oriented to production-oriented, leveraging science and technology. The university’s leadership, under Vice Chancellor Prof. Mrs. Nnenna Oti, is committed to consolidating a culture of excellence in training, research, and administration, supported by centers like ACE-FUELS. This vision emphasizes quality assurance, international accreditation, and partnerships as key drivers of FUTO’s global competitiveness.

In summary, FUTO’s international collaborations encompass:

  • Pursuit of global institutional accreditation and quality assurance with QAA.

  • Hosting international academic conferences and engaging global scholars.

  • Longstanding partnerships with IEEE and international research bodies for conferences and training.

  • Collaborations with multinational corporations and international organizations like UNICEF to enhance student skills and career readiness.

  • Strategic leadership focused on embedding global standards and fostering research excellence.

These initiatives collectively enhance FUTO’s academic reputation, research capabilities, and global partnerships, positioning it as a leading technological university in Africa and beyond.
