The Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) is at the forefront of promoting gender equality and empowering women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. As we approach International Women’s Day on March 8, 2025, FUTO is gearing up for a series of events and initiatives to celebrate women’s achievements and inspire the next generation of female leaders in STEM.
UNESCO International Day of Women and Girls in Science
FUTO’s commitment to empowering women in STEM was evident earlier this year when the African Centre for Excellence in Future Energies and Electrochemical Systems (ACE-FUELS) at FUTO joined the global celebration of the 2025 UNESCO International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11. The event, themed “Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice in Science,” marked the 10th anniversary of this important day.
The celebration at ACE-FUELS featured two key sessions:
- A breakfast meeting for Women in Chemistry of the Imo State Chapter of the Chemical Society of Nigeria.
- A live-streamed webinar and panel discussion from UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, targeting female students from FUTO and surrounding communities.
Upcoming International Women’s Day Celebrations
Building on the success of the UNESCO event, FUTO is planning a comprehensive program for International Women’s Day 2025. The university’s celebrations will align with the global theme “For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.” Here’s what to expect:
1. STEM Career Fair
FUTO will host a STEM career fair featuring successful women in various STEM fields. This event will provide female students with role models and networking opportunities, encouraging them to pursue careers in science and technology.
2. Panel Discussions
Prominent female faculty members and industry leaders will participate in panel discussions addressing challenges and opportunities for women in STEM. Topics will include breaking gender stereotypes, work-life balance, and strategies for career advancement.
3. Workshops and Skill-building Sessions
Practical workshops will be organized to enhance skills crucial for success in STEM fields. These may include coding bootcamps, research methodology sessions, and leadership training.
4. Research Showcase
Female students and faculty members will have the opportunity to present their research projects, highlighting the contributions of women to scientific advancement at FUTO.
5. Mentorship Program Launch
FUTO will use this occasion to launch a year-long mentorship program pairing female students with successful women in STEM careers, providing guidance and support throughout their academic journey.
ACE-FUELS: A Hub for Women in STEM
The African Centre for Excellence in Future Energies and Electrochemical Systems (ACE-FUELS) at FUTO continues to play a crucial role in promoting women’s participation in STEM+E (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, plus Energy). The center’s initiatives include:
- Developing strategies to increase female enrollment in STEM+E programs
- Organizing regular activities to inspire and support women in these fields
- Creating a supportive community for female scientists and engineers
Looking Ahead: Accelerating Action
As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2025, FUTO recognizes that there is still work to be done to achieve full gender equality in STEM fields. The university is committed to accelerating action towards this goal, aligning with the International Women’s Day 2025 campaign theme of “Accelerate Action”.
By fostering an inclusive environment, providing mentorship opportunities, and showcasing the achievements of women in STEM, FUTO is playing a vital role in shaping a more equitable future for all. These celebrations serve not only to honor the accomplishments of women but also to inspire and empower the next generation of female scientists, engineers, and innovators.
As we look forward to the events and initiatives planned for International Women’s Day 2025 at FUTO, it’s clear that the university is dedicated to breaking barriers and creating opportunities for women in STEM. Through collective action and shared commitment, FUTO is contributing to the global effort to achieve gender parity and empower women in all fields of study and work.
